Tell me if this sounds familiar.

\n

You sit down in the computer for a few minutes, hoping to whip up a quick blog post. Then an idea hits you. It’s vague at first, but it has a certain sparkle of possibility. You begin constructing a post, becoming more convinced with each word that you’re onto something.

\n

The feeling grows and grows until your fingers are flying across the keyboard. The words are flowing, and you’re saying exactly what you want to state, exactly the way you want to state it. You bring the post to a close with an ending that you can only describe as, “Perfect,” and then pause to read what you’ve written.

\n

A smile spreads across your face. It’s clever, original… brilliant. You only hesitate for a second before posting it to your blog. “I can’t wait to see what they say about that,” you think. You walk away from the computer, sure you’ve written a masterpiece.

\n

A couple of hours pass and you come back to reread your post. As you scan through it, you feel a weight in the pit of your stomach. This post isn’t brilliant. It’s arrogant, disconnected, and desperate for attention.

\n

“What was I thinking?” you ask yourself. And I’ll tell you: you weren’t thinking. You were drunk on your own words.

\n

Writing Can Make You Feel Drunk

\n

Master copywriters have long described good writing as hypnotic. It draws readers in, using its flow and rhythm to put people in a state of higher suggestibility, making it easier for you to sell them something.

\n

It’s a dirty analogy, but it’s similar to getting them drunk. Each point you make is like pouring them another glass, slowly washing away their objections, tugging on their emotions, and leading them toward the sale without them even realizing it.

\n

But it’s a two-way street.

\n

When you’re writing, you can put yourself into the same say. Like a brewer drinking your own product, you can intoxicate yourself during the act of creation.

\n

It’s happened to me lots of times. Fortunately though, I’ve learned to recognize it and walk away before posting something foolish to my blog. Here are the 7 warning signs that you should look for:

\n

1. You Think the Post Is Brilliant

\n

I’ve noticed that, whenever I finish a post and think it’s brilliant, there’s at least a 50% chance that it’s not. Frequently, it’s just pandering for attention, and I’ll regret posting it later.

\n

2. You Think the Post Is Hilarious

\n

Humor is perilous. Not only do people have drastically different thoughts on what’s funny, but there’s a fine line between making your readers laugh and offending them to a point where they unsubscribe.

\n

The only way to know for sure is to run it by someone. Comedy writers work as a team for a reason. Sometimes, you’re being funny. Other times, you’re just being an ass.

\n

3. You’re Actually Drunk (or High)

\n

Alcohol and marijuana are the ideal friends of many a writer. We can argue all day about whether it really helps or not, but both can impair your judgment on whether you’ve written something worth publishing to the world. Be forewarned.

\n

4. Your Heart Is Pounding

\n

If your heart is pounding, then you’re definitely in some sort of heightened state, and it’s simple to move too fast. Whenever I drink lots of caffeine, for instance, my heartbeat and writing output both speed up, but the posts don’t make as much sense. Writing after watching a good movie or reading a powerful piece of writing can create the same effect.

\n

5. You Can’t Wait to See How People React

\n

Thoughts like, “I can’t wait to see what kinds of comments I get” and, “This should get some conversation going” are surefire indicators that you’ve written something risky. It could be bold, but it might just be brash.

\n

6. Your Stomach Tightens up

\n

Sometimes, you’re writing something that makes absolute sense, but you notice your stomach starting to tighten up. This is your subconscious trying to tell you that a part of you disagrees with what you are saying. Pay attention.

\n

7. You Hesitate before Clicking “Post”

\n

If your mouse hovers over the “Post” button, hesitating for a moment before putting it out for the world to see, then you’ve written something that you know is risky. You should probably hold off and figure out what’s bothering you about it.

\n

Don’t Drink and Drive

\n

If you’re going to drink, you’re eventually going to get drunk. Similarly, if you’re going to write, you’re eventually going to state something stupid. Nothing in the world can change it, and you might as well accept it.

\n

You can, however, take responsibility for your words and avoid subjecting your readers to that stupidity. Just like you shouldn’t drive if you think there’s even a chance that you’re drunk, you shouldn’t post your writing if you think there’s even a chance that it’s not what you really want to state.

\n

Instead, you should:

\n

  • Sober up - Walk away from the post for a few hours and give your internal editor a chance to wake up. He’ll tell you whether the post is good or not.
  • \n

  • Find a driver - If you can’t afford to wait, ask a friend to read the post and give you honest feedback. Regardless of how euphoric you are about it, trust their judgment.
  • \n

\n

Sometimes, the post really will be as good as you thought it was, but frequently, you’ll scrap it, or at least make some revisions. Either way, your writing will be better, and you’ll avoid the embarrassment of posting something you shouldn’t.

Unless you have a staff of full-time writers, a professional designer, an existing audience you can leverage and money to pour into promotions, the process of becoming popular rarely happens overnight. Or in a matter of months.

\n

In fact, most of the world’s most popular blogs plugged away in relative obscurity for several years before they made it huge.

\n

It seems that an essential aspect of becoming an A-list blogger is to write well over a long period of time. You might be writing well now, but what’s your long-term strategy? How well are you preparing yourself for the long-haul?

\n

In this post, I want to share nine tips you can use to prepare your blog for long-term success. The tips focus around three key areas: inspiration, motivation and focus.

\n

Inspiration

\n

1. Write for a target audience. Confining yourself within set topics can be a one-way road to burn-out. You’ll get to a point where your range of topics doesn’t inspire you, or when you feel you’ve done a particular topic to death.

\n

A question I often get is: how can I broaden my scope without losing some readers along the way? The key is to write for people, not topics. Work out who your target audience is and write posts that fulfill their needs. The range of ways you can do this will always be limitless. It’s hard not to be inspired when you’re writing with a target audience in mind.
\n2. Make regular deposits to your idea bank. Remaining inspired over the long-term is essential to any long-term blogging strategy. Once you know what you want to write, it’s simply a matter of doing the work: of sitting down to write it. If you don’t have ideas, however, there’s nothing to help you begin.

\n

The key to dealing with this problem is to come up with many more post ideas than you need. It means you’ll have the creative work done for you in those inevitable periods where you’re feeling uncreative.

\n

Motivation

\n

3. Engage with readers. De-personalizing your readership can be one of the key causes of dwindling enthusiasm for blogging. When you start to think of the people who read your blog as a set of fluctuating numbers that either go up or down each day, you’ll stop caring about them.

\n

Each single digit in your feed count and each single digit in your traffic reports is a person who’s taken time out of their day to read what you write. Take the time to interact with them, get to know them and help them out. Be active in your comments and respond to every email you get. The rewards you get through personally connecting with readers vastly outweigh the cost in time.

\n

4. Set long-term goals. Long-term goals and long-term blogging go hand in hand. Set goals that are too modest and you’ll grow complacent as soon as you achieve them. Set goals that are too far out of reach and you’ll question whether it’s worth trying at all.

\n

The ideal approach to take is to stagger your goals. Think of your aspirations like a ladder: put your dream at the top, and work backwards down to a very modest goal (get 50 more subscribers, for example). The next step might be a hundred subscribers, then five-hundred, and so on. You get the satisfaction of completing goals and the motivation to strive for those that are further out of reach.

\n

5. Make money. If blogging helps your finances then that’s another motivation to stick with it. If you’re not monetizing your blog, why not give it a shot? If you’re monetizing and it’s not working, try something different. Get some freelance work, write and sell an eBook, or try to raise money for a cause you’re passionate about. Turning a hobby into a money-maker can do wonders for your enthusiasm.

\n

6. Reverse engineer your actions. If you don’t know what you’re trying to achieve, you’ll never know what you should be traveling towards. Defining your overall goals will grant you to reverse engineer your blogging.

\n

For example: If you want to make a full-time income online, every action you do should be oriented towards that goal. If you want to get 1,000 subscribers, you should focus mainly on increasing your subscriber base. Once you know where you want to end up, it becomes much easier to map out the route you need to take if you want to get there.

\n

7. Keep track of milestones. Your milestones sheet should be something you look to all the time. When your subscriber count reaches 100, or 500, or 1,000, write it down. When an A-lister comments on one of your posts, write it down. When a popular blog links to you, write it down.

\n

Assembling all your ideal achievements into a blog timeline will help you feel enthusiastic on days when the mere thought of blogging is getting you down.

\n

Focus

\n

8. Work out a sustainable rhythm. If you feel like the time you spend writing posts is negatively impacting on other aspects of your life, it’s time to slow down. Blogging at an unsustainable pace will make you want to stop all-together. Believe me — nothing cripples your blog more than an unexplained hiatus.

\n

Consistency is key. Set your posting rhythm at whatever feels comfortable — even if it’s just once a week. You’ll write superior posts and approach blogging as a hobby rather than a chore.

\n

9. Build a safety net. It’s inevitable: there will be days, or weeks, when you don’t even want to look at your blog. It’s important that you prepare for those times. Once you’ve neglected your blog for long enough, it can be tempting to abandon it all-together. You need to build a safety net to avoid this outcome.

\n

A safety net is a reserve of at least one week’s worth of posts. You can dip into this safety net whenever you’re feeling uninspired, or bored, or going away. All it takes to build an effective safety net is to write one extra post a week for one month. It’s easy to build, priceless once you’ve built it. A safety net can also help prepare you for a blogging emergency.

Let Go of Your Inhibitions

\n

Audiences respond to one of two triggers: The Unexpected and The Common Experience. Both of these triggers are best expressed when your guard is let down.

\n

Here’s what I mean.

\n

Admitting to the fact that you pick your nose on the way to work is going to get a laugh. Some will be laughing at you because they didn’t expect it (and they pick their noses in the privacy of their own bathroom) and others will laugh with you because they do the same thing but were keeping it quiet.

\n

Everyday, people are playing to social norms and expectations. You stand out when you let go of those inhibitions and explore your creative freedom. Vulnerability and spontaneity can inform this freedom and help set you apart from the rest of the bloggers in your niche.

\n

Value Emotional Integrity Over Audience Response

\n

Sometimes, when I’m on stage, the audience is quiet. Painfully quiet. The material falls flat and I wish I could rewind and do something different. The other night I tried to be Michael Jackson, and it was a total dud. My husband later told me that I used a southern accent for that scene.

\n

I went for the joke instead of maintaining the emotional integrity of the Michael Jackson character. In other words, I gave attributes to a character that didn’t fit – and therefore, the audience didn’t connect.

\n

In the same way, blogging is part of an overall conversation marketing movement where transparency is not only valued but expected. Savvy audiences will see through you in a heartbeat if you try to be something or someone that you’re not.

\n

Saying “Yes, And…”

\n

There’s an improv exercise called “Yes, And.” The first player makes a statement and the second player start their response with the words, “Yes, And.” For example:

\n

Player A: “I got you a Slip and Slide for your 35th birthday!”

\n

Now, this recommendation feels a bit awkward to the beginning improviser. So it would be tempting to pretend it’s a joke or otherwise deny the situation. But this exercise teaches improvisers to accept the statements made by their fellow players and respond with gems such as:

\n

Player B: “Yes, and let’s go put string bikinis on our cellulite-infested bodies and go strut our stuff in front of the retirement center.”

\n

Raise your hand if you want to see this scene! I know I do.

\n

“Yes, And…” is all about accepting what others have to offer. Whether it’s another blogger or a commenting reader, think about what others are offering you and respond accordingly. Don’t discount something quickly because it’s something you’ve never encountered before (a perspective, a partnership, etc).

\n

Be Specific

\n

Just as with copywriting, specificity is improv gold. When doing a scene, if I state I’m at a restaurant, each single audience member could have a different image of where that scene takes place. One person might think fast food while another thinks fine dining.

\n

But if I state “Thanks for meeting me at Pete’s Soda Fountain,” that states a lot. Suddenly, my audience can visualize that I’m sitting at an old-fashioned pharmacy counter from the 1950s.

\n

As a blogger, you might think that specificity comes simple. But does it really? When you tell your audience to write a good headline, do you give them examples? When you tell them to network on Facebook, do you show them how? Being specific will completely take your blog to the next level.

\n

Play from the Top of Your Intelligence

\n

Being specific doesn’t mean dumbing down your material. One of the reasons that blogging and social media is a hit is because consumers are tired of traditional marketing that’s pushed in TV, radio, and print ads. Consumers aren’t almost as gullible as advertisers hope they are.

\n

Del Close, the late co-founder of the iO Theater in Chicago, taught his students to play from the top of their intelligence. This meant starting scenes in the “middle” instead of starting each scene off with “Hi, how are you? My name is Jane. What’s your name?”

\n

It also means pushing yourself to find the good material. Improvisers know that they can get a swift laugh from a dirty joke or a curse word. But this is often at the expense of a scene or even an entire show. Good improv holds out for the best material.

\n

Good blogging does the same.

\n
